Amina Marula Foundation Human Rights Programme

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They can never be taken away, although they can sometimes be restricted – for example if a person breaks the law, or in the interests of national security. These basic rights are based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence.  These values are defined and protected by law.

FIXING MISBALANCES

But there is a misbalance when it comes to realising the human rights of all those who live in South Africa, particularly when it comes to those infected and affected by HIV, STIs and TB. It is also apparent in the fact that the overwhelming burden of the epidemic today is borne by marginalised communities, where the disease threatens to reverse vital achievements in human development.

REPAILING NEGATIVE HIV FORCES

HIV, TB and poverty are collectively reinforcing negative forces in many of our communities. Research proves that lack of education, accountability, responsibility on human rights are barriers driving the spread of HIV, STIs and TB and severely threatening our progress towards ending HIV.
